Laura Jim, Marc Rice and 10 HPA students traveled from HPA to Puako, HI to conduct a one day capture / recapture tagging trip at one of our site where we have been working for many years. Because of Covid we haven't been there for 2 years. We arrived at the park with our equipment at 0840 and we were set up and ready to begin work due to the great work of the students.
The tide was pretty high so there was a capture team of Ms Jim, Alden and Charlotte that did most of the in water capture work. They got right to it and we were in business with our first honu by 0920.
By 1115 we had worked up 7 turtles and, due to the suggestions of some hungry students, we stopped and had an early lunch.
Right after lunch we got back to work and were able to capture and process 8 more honu before it was time to pack up and depart for HPA
Statistics for the day:
In total we captured 15 honu (8 recaptures and 7 new captures)
The mean average of straight carapace length was 53.2 cm
The Median straight carapace length was 51.9 cm
